SurvivorFest honors families fighting cancer

IMPERIAL, Calif. – Cancer survivors were honored on Saturday at SurvivorFest “Beating the Odds” event in the City of Imperial, organized by The Cancer Resource Center of the Desert of El Centro.

Hundreds of luminarias lined up around the race track at Imperial High School football field on Saturday evening in honor of cancer survivors and loved ones who had passed away due to cancer. Families packed the field enjoying a fall type festival with games, food, hay ride, pumpkin patch and live music. Then, late in the evening, the lights were turned off and the names of all those who’ve survived cancer or passed away from it were read one by one.

A CRCD volunteer said the event had a personal significance to him. “I just feel like I have to give back to the community. Also, in honor of our niece who passed away six years ago from brain tumors. And i just feel like in her honor – and everybody in some way, shape or form their lives have been touched by cancer,” Imperial resident Danny Garcia said. All funds raised at the festival will be used to help cancer patients in Imperial Valley.
