Gov. Ducey visits Yuma to rally support against Prop 205

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is teaming up with the Arizonans For Responsible Drug Policy to campaign against Proposition 205 which seeks to legalize recreational marijuana.

The Governor is calling the proposition a major monopoly in favor of existing medical marijuana.

“Prop 205 is the most consequential issue on the ballot this cycle at the state level,” said Gov. Ducey.

During a roundtable meeting at Arizona Western College, the governor told local leaders that voters aren’t getting the whole story of how the proposition will affect the state. He said the proposition allows for children and teenagers to be targeted by marijuana dispensaries whose profits in edible marijuana are increasing.

“The big lie is that this is just like alcohol so we should regulate it like alcohol. Well if the people who wrote this law… really felt like that, then they would allow it to be regulated like alcohol except they don’t,” said Ducey.

The governor also pointed to the example of state’s like Colorado, where marijuana has been legal since 2014. He said Colorado is spending more on the negative consequences of having recreational marijuana legalized than they make on tax profits to help schools.

“Their [Colorado] enforcement said that he fears they are going to lose an entire generation of young Coloradoans why would we allow that to happen in the state of Arizona? That’s why I’m asking people to vote no,” the governor said.

Other community leaders say they are putting aside political ties to speak out against the proposition.

“Regardless of anybody’s position on legalization of marijuana, the way this proposition is written is dangerous,” said state senator Lynne Pancrazi (D).
