ECPD awarded $50k grant to battle high traffic collisions rates

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- According to law enforcement, the city of El Centro has some of the highest rates of traffic collisions and injuries in the state compared to cities of similar sizes.

But thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, the El Centro Police Department (ECPD) hope to lower those rates.

ECPD officials plan to use the grant to fund selective traffic enforcements such as DUI details, primary collision factors, traffic stops.

Commander Aaron Reel, of the El Centro Police Department said about the grant, "This additional of funding allows us to the freedom and opportunity to put those details out there on the street to focus on those efforts. To try and enhance the overall safety and well being of our community."

Commander Reel said public safety continues to be their number one priority.
