Wreaths Across America

Wreaths Across America (WAA) is accepting donations to be able to put wreaths on the graves of 2,000 veterans this holiday season.

They are a national nonprofit organization that began in 2007 and until this day they continue to expand the annual wreath layering ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

It all began with a businessman from Maine in 1992 when he donated the wreaths to Arlington. It wasn’t until 2014 when every headstone at Arlington received a wreath.

The wreaths are brought from Maine every year and hundreds of volunteer professional truck drivers use donated equipment and fuel to deliver the wreaths across the country.

Each wreath costs $15 and WAA hopes to be able to fill the graves with all 2000 veterans.

WAA’s mission is to remember, honor, and teach which is carried out during the wreath ceremonies at the different cemetery across America.

Congress officially declared a Saturday in December as National Wreaths Across America Day.

Locally there are almost 2,000 veteran graves between Sunset Vista Cemetery in Foothills and Desert Lawn Cemetery in Yuma. WAA hopes to be able to place a wreath on every headstone this season to show that they are not forgotten. This can only be done by the donations of others.

WAA is also looking for people to donate their time the day before the event, December 13, to put crosses on every grave.

On December 14 the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Desert Lawn Cemetery and at 12 p.m. at Sunset Vista Cemetery.

If you’d like to donate to WAA you can contact Winnie Moir at 928-502-0238.
