Police ID body of man found burned in El Centro

The burned body that was discovered by the El Centro firefighters September 17, has been identified as a 30-year-old resident from El Centro, according to El Centro Police Department, ( ECPD ).

Raul Esparza, is the man found dead and burned beyond recognition.

His body was discovered inside a burning trash can along the railroad tracks in El Centro.

“We as the El Centro Police Department we are familiar with him through previous law enforcement contact, but nothing that would warrant his death,” said Aaron Reel, ECPD commander.

ECPD says the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroner was able to identify Esparza with help from his family.

” His family had reported him on September 18 as missing. We were able to confirm his identity on the 20th , ” said Reel.

ECPD confirmed that Esparza was murdered.

” The results of that autopsy indicated that it was an intentional act, and we are treating it as a murder investigation, ” said Reel.

This is the second homicide near the train tracks within the last two months.

Residents in the area say these murders are shocking.

” It’s getting kind of hectic here in town. Just be careful, walking through this pathway here, because a lot of things are happening and it’s not good, ” said Johnny Haywood, El Centro Resident.

Anyone with information that might help police with the homicide investigation is encouraged to contact ECPD .
