Flash flood watch in effect for Yuma County

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a flash flood watch for south central and southwestern Arizona, including Yuma County.

Thunderstorms are expected to last through Thursday afternoon.

The NWS advises drivers to be particularly careful when driving near washes, creeks, or other drainage areas during bouts of hard rain.

The Yuma Fire Department offers safety tips in the case of rainfall.

“Make sure you leave more distance between you and the car before you because your stopping distance longer when that rain is going down,” said Mike Erfert , Yuma Fire Department public information officer.

He added that if traffic lights stop working to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
