Plans for solid waste transfer facility cancelled

Yuma won’t get a solid waste transfer facility anytime soon.

The City of Yuma’s Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted Monday night to decline the conditional use permit.

A group of senior citizens made it their mission to inform the community about the permit that the City of Yuma was considering.

Tuesday night’s meeting was packed with people holding signs. Most wanted to make sure a solid waste transfer facility didn’t make its way to Yuma. Several spoke out against the plant.

Hydrochem AZ wanted to build the plant. Its management explained why they want to come to Yuma.

” We just tried to bring another company here to Yuma, Arizona to bring more tax dollars and bring more jobs. I know it was mentioned that there isn’t a lot of jobs coming. We thought, you know, this is a good place to start, ” said David Diaz, Vice President of HydroChem AZ.

Diaz says if his company does try to build a waste facility in Yuma again, it will find a different location. It will also consider everything the residents had to say.

Many people left the meeting happy.

” We don’t have to worry about contamination in our backyards. People can still breathe and still live and little kids can still play in the playgrounds and the city can relax a little bit . The fifteen jobs they wanted to bring here with this facility is pennies, ” Sharon Harrison, resident.
