Police remind consumers to be aware of Venmo scams

Authorities warn of Venmo scams targeting users via text messages.

FOX Business reports the scam has been working under the guise of the same colors and fonts of the mobile payment service’s app.

Reports said people have received texts saying their accounts are about to be charged, but if they want to cancel the withdrawal, they must log in to their accounts.

Massachusetts based Dighton Police Department said the text allows users to sign in using any phone number and password but asks for personal financial information, including a bank card to verify the identity of the user.

According to FOX Business, police warn people who already enter their information to let the bank or credit card lender know.

Venmo, which is owned by Paypal, reported to FOX Business that customers who they may have been targeted by scammers posing as Venmo should contact spoof@paypal.com.
