Mexicali celebrates Mexico’s Independence

Today the city of Mexicali celebrated the 209th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence from Spain. Community members came out to honor and pay tribute to their heritage.

Crowds filled the streets of Mexicali, to watch the city’s annual Mexican Independence Day Parade.

It’s a tradition for people all across Mexico ,it ‘s also a day celebrated by many in the U.S.

In Mexicali, 12 schools and their marching bands participated in the parade.

Mexico’s armed forces were also in attendance.

They marched and demonstrated war equipment and other tactics the military has set in place to protect the country in case of any threat.

“For me and for most Mexicans, this day is very important because this day is the beginning of Mexico as a nation,” said Liliana Plumeda , Mexicali resident.

This year, Plumeda says she had the honor of taking her 2-year-old daughter to the parade. She hopes that one day she will fully understand the meaning of this day.

” My small daughter likes to be here. Later maybe she will understand how important it is to everyone here in the community to celebrate this day, ” said Plumeda .

” My son had the honor of participating in the parade. I am just so proud of him and proud of my country. I want my children to feel it in their blood that they are mexican and they also need to know that there’s people who gave their life for our liberty, ” said Karina Perez Camacho, Mexicali resident.

The governor of Baja California, Francisco Vega was also in attendance. Soldiers saluted and paid their respects to vega as they marched together.
