Democrats descend upon Galivants Ferry for historic stump

Four Presidential candidates are descending on South Carolina for one of the oldest traditional campaign events in the country.

The Galivants Ferry Stump is a biennial Democratic event held in a rural part of northeastern South Carolina. One by one, candidates will speak to a crowd of thousands all the Little Pee Dee River.

Joe Biden, Bill de Blasio , Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar are scheduled to speak Monday evening.

The event dates back to the 1870’s . It began when a former civil war general passed through town as part of his campaign for South Carolina goveror . Later local businessman. Joseph Holliday, began inviting Democratic candidates to give speeches from his store. Candidates spoke from atop a stump to be seen over the crowd.

Speakers don’t use the stump anymore, but they still address crowds from the porch of Holliday’s store.

Republicans are invited, but they aren’t allowed to speak.
