Never Forget: 9/11 stair climb by Yuma firefighters

As thousands of people across the nation honor the tragedy that shook the world on September 11, 2011, first responders with the City of Yuma and the community hosted a 9/11 memorial stair climb.

Each step symbolizing a heroic distance of those fallen men and women who traveled inside the world trade center.

“It was devastating and confused first of all. Because immediately It was like “what was going on?” We were watching as the first tower was burning and saw the second plane crash and knew at that moment it was not an accident,” said Chief Steve Irr with the Yuma Fire Department (YFD).

Arron Wonder a firefighter with YFD for over six years recalls the moment he turned on his television, hearing the devastating news.

“It was the first thing that I saw and from there the whole day revolved around that,” said Wonders.

On 9/11 the nation lost over 3,000 first responders and civilians. The fire department emphasizes that today is a to ‘Never Forget.’
