U.S. prepares to open tent court for asylum-seekers
The United States is ready to open a tent court on the border to help handle tens of thousands of asylum cases.
One such court in Laredo, Texas is set to begin operations Monday. Its hearings will be held entirely by video conference. A second court is expected to open soon in Brownsville.
Both courts will handle asylum claims filed by the tens of thousands of Central American migrants waiting in Mexico.
The Trump administration introduced its ” Remain in Mexico ” policy in San Diego in January, then expanded it to El Paso.
The Mexican government says an estimated 400,000 non-Mexican asylum seekers are currently waiting for their cases to be heard in U.S. immigration courts.
The Laredo court is expected to handle as many as 300 cases a day.
