Where you can commemorate the fallen of 9/11 today

18 years ago, the United States woke up on a Tuesday to news of one of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil. Thousands of lives were lost, including hundreds of brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to save others stuck in the rubble of the World Trade Center in New York City.

Here in the desert southwest, the community is continuing tradition of remembering the fallen by hosting several events you and your family can join and commemorate the lives of those lost on September 11th .

Yuma Fire Department Remembers Fallen Firefighters @ Firehouse No. 2

343 flags are on display and lit up at night right outside of Yuma Fire Department Firehouse No. 2. The display serves as a memorial to the 343 fallen firefighters of New York City Fire Department as well as an extra 72 law enforcement officers that lost their lives, in an attempt to save people stuck inside the World Trade Center.

Evening Memorial Service @ Sanguinetti Firehouse No. 1

The 9/11 Memorial at Station #1 incorporates a 24 ” , 160-pound section of I-beam recovered from the World Trade Center. Constructed by local workers and Yuma Fire Department personnel to honor the fallen at the various locations of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Tours of the Fire Station will also be available after the service.

2nd Annual Memorial Stair Climb

The United Yuma Fire Fighters Association puts together this event where local first responders and anyone interested will be climbing the stairs of the building in remembrance to the steps that the firefighters had to climb on 9/11.

When? Wednesday, September 11th @ 5: 00am – 7: 00pm

5th Annual Moving Tribute

Several YFD will be making this run and walk in turnout gear and carrying a United States flag to honor those who gave their lives that day. The event will start at Fire Station #3 (508 East 25th Street) and will end at the 9/11 memorial at Fire Station #1.

Imperial Valley College Memorial Service

A ceremony will take place by the flagpole on the lawn in front of the campus administration building. Local fire and law enforcement personnel will participate in raising a large United States flag. Guest speakers, lowering of the flag to half-mast and a 21 gun salute will also take place.
