Bicycle lane safety in Yuma
With numerous bicycle lanes now within Yuma City Limits, bicyclists can expect to travel just a little more safely.
The Yuma Police Department ( YPD ) wants to send out reminders on how to practice bicycle safety when utilizing the bicycle lanes.
Bicyclists shouldn’t ride a bike against the flow of adjacent traffic in a bicycle lane, sidewalk, or shoulder.
No person under the age of 18 should ride a bike, be a passenger on a bike, ride in a restraining seat attached to the bike, or ride in a trailer towed by a bike unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened helmet that meets the current standards of the American National Standards Institution for protective headgear.
The person operating the bike or play vehicle, entering the street or public highway must yield the right-of-way to closely approaching bicycles, play vehicles, and motor vehicles.
A person riding a bike or play vehicle on a sidewalk or shared-use path that enters or crosses a roadway should yield the right-of-way to traffic on the roadway.
YPD wants to remind the community that the bicycle lanes should not be used by pedestrians while walking or running, because the path is still an active roadway and can be hazardous to pedestrians.
