IID provides energy south of the border

Mexicali needed help to beat the blazing heat this summer, and the Imperial Irrigation District ( IID ) answered the call.

In the middle of last June, IID started providing the region with the electricity it needed to cool its hospital, as well as thousands of homes and businesses.

On Thursday, officials from both sides of the border celebrated that collaboration and their ongoing relationship.

IID Board President, Erik Ortega said, ” We’re assisting the people of Mexico. And they’re assisting us. In regard to our excess energy, which as you know is not like water that you can store. That energy when you have nowhere to put it is lost. In this case we can put it to good. ”

Ortega said the power-sharing agreement has not affected Imperial Valley rate payers.
