Arrests made in slayings of Phoenix coffee house workers

Phoenix police have arrested two teenagers in last year’s shooting deaths of two coffee house workers.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said Wednesday that two boys, ages 16 and 15, have been booked into Maricopa County jail on several counts, including first-degree murder.

Authorities say 41-year-old David Bessent and 24-year-old Zachary Walter were shot during an armed robbery Oct. 5 while walking from Jobot Coffee in the Roosevelt Row neighborhood.

Walter was fatally wounded. Bessent succumbed to his injuries five days later.

Investigators say the suspects fled the scene in a white Dodge Durango.

Thompson did not say what evidence led investigators to arrest the teens.

They have been charged as adults but The Associated Press is not identifying them because of their ages.

Police believe at least two others are involved.
