A tamarin flavored candy recalled for high amounts of lead

Consumers were warned Tuesday not to eat certain varieties of La Zagala brand Fruit Pulp Tamarin Flavor candy due to tests showing the candy to contain high amounts of lead.

The California Department of Public Health ( CDPH ) says the candies are imported from Mexico, and the product contained as much as 0.17 parts per million of lead (ppm), which is more than the state’s standard of 0.10 ppm.

The voluntary recall was placed on August 13, and CDPH says they are working with the distributor to remove the contaminated candy from stores.

According to CDPH the candy is sold in 3.5 ounce brown clay jars that are decorated with a green and yellow flower, has a clear cellophane cover, and the top of the container has a small picture of a cow with ” La Zagala ” and ” Fruit Pulp Tamarin Flavor ” . The Universal Product code is applied at the top as well, 750114345756.
