Family displaced following house fire

A house fire who officials believe started from its patio left a family of six displaced in the 7700 block of East Topeka Place Sunday afternoon.

The Yuma Fire Department (YFD) said firefighters arrived and found a tile-roofed house with a large amount of fire in the patio area and heavy smoke coming from the gable vents at 7711 East Topeka Place. The fire, that also endangered the home nearby, was soon extinguished.

YFD said five of the six residents were home at the time of the fire and evacuated safely with no injuries.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is underway. Fire officials believe the fire began outside on the patio and quickly spread into the home’s attic area. The patio and attic space suffered heavy fire damage.

The fire department added the home will require significant repairs and could not be reoccupied.

The American Red Cross assisted the displaced families.
