Candidate deadline for local districts election is August 9
Candidates wanting to run for local districts in the Imperial County general election in November have until tomorrow to submit their applications.
Seventeen candidates have officially filed and declared their candidacy at the county’s Registrar of Voters Office.
Eleven seats in five jurisdictions in the county are up for election this November.
Meadows Union School District, Salton Community Services District, Seeley County Water District, Winterhaven County Water District, and Bombay Beach Community Services District all have two or more seats up for election.
” Elections are split, you have usually a board of five, so three go to election on one year and two years later the other two go to election. The term is four years, ” said Debra Porter, Registrar of Voters.
The Meadows Union School District Trustee Board seems to be the coveted seat this year, with six candidates in the running.
Porter said it’s a record number compared to previous years.
” For Meadows, we’ve had six candidates which is an overwhelming amount for Meadows Union. The local ones are the ones that affect you right away. Where your child goes to school, if they’re going to Meadows, then you need to be out there and vote, ” said Porter.
Valley native, Roberto Garcia, is one of the six candidates running for the Meadows Union School District.
“I hope that I can help out in any way I can to give all the tools necessary for all the teachers and the students to succeed and want to pursue a college degree,” said Garcia.
Garcia said residents need to be more involved with their local elections.
“Voting is one of our major foundations of our democracy here in the United States, and they really need to get out and vote,” said Garcia.
” You’re voting for someone that’s going to represent you, your thoughts. The way you see how that district should proceed down the future. ”
August 9 is the last day for candidates to file their declaration of candidacy at the Registrar of Voters office, no later than 5:00 p.m.
The general election is November 5.
