Residents in San Luis fear opioid epidemic on the rise

On Saturday, the San Luis Police Department ( SLPD ) conducted a traffic stop on the corner of Los Oros Street and Main Street that resulted in a 68.04-pound methamphetamine bust.

An SLPD K9 unit found 1.2 million dollars worth of methamphetamine stored in various compartments within the white 2016 Toyota Corolla.

An 18-year-old suspect from Calexico , Calif., was identified as the driver of the vehicle. She is facing felony charges for possession of dangerous drugs, possession of dangerous drugs to transport for sale or import into the state, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

This year, officers busted around 80 pounds of meth. That’s not including this bust over the weekend.

“Cases related to fentanyl which this year we’ve confiscated over four thousand pills, and we’ve had other cases related to meth,” said SLPD Lt. Marco Santana.
