Back-to-school tips for students and parents

Going back to school can be both stressful and exciting for parents and students. But beyond just buying new clothes and school supplies, there are many other things to prepare mentally for as well.

With many students still in vacation mode because of the summer break, Superintendent Laurie Doering of Crane Schools has some advice for back-to-school success.

Build a routine. Make sure you get enough sleep every night, eat a balanced breakfast, and stick to a schedule that is realistic for you.

Prepare early. Find out where your classroom is, who your teacher is, what you’ll need for the school year before you start school. Then, you will feel less anxious about the upcoming year.

Go to your school’s Open House. Open House events are an effective way for parents to be involved in their child’s education. They are able to get a feel for what the teacher will expect and be like, as well as be able to understand their child.

Be involved in your child’s education. Parent involvement can make a huge difference. Studies from the American Psychological Association show that children with parents involved in their education are less likely to suffer from low self-esteem, earn higher grades or test scores, graduate from high school or higher education, and develop confidence.
