Migrants await in Mexico while their asylum requests are processed

The new policy is known as ” Remain in Mexico, ” that requires undocumented immigrants to stay in Mexico to await their asylum court hearing was first announced by former Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen.

This new policy requires the government to send asylum seekers back to Mexico while they wait to see if they are granted asylum into the U.S.

The court ruled for the government to implement that new policy, but a local judge Sebastian Sanchez said this policy poses setbacks including not being able to speak with their clients until their court hearing.

” To seek asylum they get processed there and the authorities draft what we call a notice to appear which is the first document that has to be filled in court in order for a case to be open, ” said Sanchez.

While the undocumented immigrants reside in Mexico, Mexican authorities run screenings to grant them visas and even possible work permits.

Sanchez said that each asylum seeker has the right to an attorney, but those expenses come out of their pocket.

” The NTA’S are then given a copy in English and Spanish as to when and where they need to present themselves at the port of entry, ” said Sanchez.

This is while all these cases are pending in the United States, but these pose multiple obstacles like communication is minimal.

” The only time the attorney has contact with their client in person is outside the courtroom or inside the court hearing, ” said Sanchez.
