Rollover in Somerton sends one man to the hospital

One man was taken to the hospital after being involved in a rollover in Somerton.

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to the single vehicle rollover at County 17 ½ and S. Somerton Avenue at 8:20 Wednesday morning.

Upon their arrival they found the lone occupant, a 20-year-old man, sitting on the side of the roadway. A San Luis Police Sergeant had pulled over to render assistance prior to the arrival of the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department.

The man stated that prior to the accident he was returning home from a funeral. His black Chevy SUV was northbound when it left the roadway and struck an irrigation berm. The driver overcorrected back onto the roadway and then once again, causing the SUV to go off the east side of Somerton Avenue and roll in a field.

The driver stated that he was wearing a seat belt and lost consciousness temporarily as a result of the rollover. He was complaining of pain to his head and lower back. Somerton Cocopah Paramedics placed the man in a full cervical spine as a precaution and transported him to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
