EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Saturday evening locals are invited to Bucklin Park to remember the lives lost by police brutality and bring awareness police brutality as well as the racism that still exists in this country.

Hilton Smith organizer of BLM’s imperial county chapter says local teens are leading this fight for equality.

“So this is to bring awareness of the racial injustice that we have to endure In this country and I am pleased to see that there's a lot of young people getting engaged.”

They will be holding a moment of silence for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.. the amount of time George Floyd was on the ground with a police officer pinning him by the neck before he died.

“Can you imagine someone having the life sucked out of them and the whole world can see for 8 minutes and 46 seconds when you think about it that’s a pretty long time so we’re going to let the audience know how long this man had to suffer,” said Smith.

Smith says it's important to not lose momentum because change is happening.

“In California, we just passed the AB392 bill by Shirley Weber of San Diego ok so we’re moving in the right direction but it's going to take the effort of people getting involved getting engaged and that’s how progress will be made.”

BLM of Imperial County currently has a Facebook Fundraiser that was set up to help the most marginalized in the community. You can donate here.

“Helping out the community as far as community awareness, and outreach for the unsheltered right now for the last five years black lives matter has been going out hydrating those individuals who are homeless.”

The memorial will take place Saturday at 7 pm at Bucklin Park.
