MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY)-First responders COVID-19 cases increase in Mexicali.

A police officer has died of the coronavirus, 22 police officers have tested positive along with a paramedic from the fire department.

The director of the municipal police, María Elena Andrade, says Santos González Ramírez, 42, died Monday of atypical pneumonia suspected of COVID-19.

The director says they have an agreement with the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) for police officers who have coronavirus symptoms to be tested immediately.

However, the chief at the Fire Department in Mexicali, Rubén Osuna, says that a paramedic tested positive last Thursday. The paramedic's partner was quarantined for prevention.

The fire department has been exclusively responsible for transferring COVID-19 patients to hospitals in Mexicali. There are currently 22 paramedics who work seven-day shifts. So far, only one paramedic has tested positive.
