Date rape drug commonly used in the nightlife

A local non-profit in Yuma wants to bring attention to one of the most under-reported crimes against women in the country, date rape.

The Healing Journey helps victims seek help and come forward. Estrella Fitch said it also happens in the community, however, she couldn’t give an exact number of how many cases are in the community because victims are afraid to come forward.

“This is a topic that there are not enough statistics on because a lot of the date rape victims don’t report,” said Fitch.

Most of these crimes take place at night while those who fall victim to this crime are enjoying the nightlife. Predators slip a drug into their drink, a tactic used because it makes it harder for the victim to defend themselves.

“Such as ecstasy or things where they blank out, these drugs are bought across the border that will put you out,” said Fitch.

If you or someone you may know is a victim of this crime and needs help, call the Healing Journey at 928-920-6220.
