CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Car explodes into giant fireball engulfing two officers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - On Interstate 215 near Riverside, California, there was a vehicle explosion that was caught on camera by another vehicle passing by.

Riverside CHP units responded to a vehicle fire around 3:17 p.m. last Sunday.

The 2007 Toyota Camry was blocking lanes as it was pushed down the northbound side of the interstate, just south of State Route 60.

Once the Camry made it to the shoulder, it caught fire.

Officers inspected the vehicle to make sure no one was inside and as two of them were walking by, the explosion erupted, engulfing them both in flames.

They suffered minor to moderate injuries and were both taken to a local hospital.

It was determined that the driver of the Toyota Camry was under the influence and was placed under arrest.

The cause of the vehicle fire has not been released.
