Sinkhole in Southern California swallows van

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - A sinkhole swallowed up a work van in Los Angeles Wednesday.

Footage captured shows the Spectrum van nose down in the hole, with the wipers still on.

Public works crews said a break in an eight-inch water main caused the sinkhole, said Spectrum said a technician was working in the area around 11 a.m. Pacific when it happened.

Mark Mahoney, a neighbor, heard it.

"We were home and it sounded like it was either running water or the house was actually shaking and rumbling. So I didn't know what was going on," Mahoney shared. "I walked around and didn't see anything and then went outside and there was water gushing out from the street. And I saw that the van basically had its nose into the concrete."

When asked if he saw the driver, Mahoney said, "Yeah, I ran up to the driver. He said that he was just finishing up the job nearby and he was putting his bag into the back of the van and he heard rumbling too from underneath his feet and then he said he literally grabbed his backpack and his whole car went straight into the ground."

About 30 homes in the area were without water much of the day. Crews had to shut it off to stop the leak.
