Calexico flag football shuts out Vikings

HOLTVILLE, Calif. (KYMA) - The Calexico Bulldogs shut out the Holtville Vikings 20-0 in an Imperial Valley League flag football matchup, improving to 8-2 in league play and 15-5 overall.

Calexico established control early, taking a 13-0 lead into the final play of the first quarter. Bulldogs quarterback Lizbeth Ortiz connected with Mia Cruz on a deep pass, setting up another touchdown on the following play.

Calexico added the extra point to extend its advantage to 20-0.

Holtville looked to respond offensively, but the Bulldogs' defense continued to make plays. Zoe Terrazas disrupted a Vikings passing attempt with a deflection, while Calexico's offense threatened to add to its lead before halftime.

Ortiz took another shot toward the end zone, but Holtville junior Mijiah Mitosinka intercepted the pass and returned it to give the Vikings' offense some breathing room.

The Vikings continued searching for a breakthrough before the break. Kadence Toten connected with Sophia Iten on a pass that initially bounced off Iten's hands, but she recovered to make the catch for a solid gain.

Holtville was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, and the score remained unchanged through the second half as Calexico secured the 20-0 victory.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 4-6 in Imperial Valley League play and 12-6 overall, while the Bulldogs continued their strong season with another league win.
