Wyoming senator on midterm elections, lowering fuel costs and Kimberly Guilfoyle allegations

(CBS, KYMA) - Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy.) spoke with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation Sunday about the upcoming midterm elections.

According to Brennan, there are six out of ten seats held by Republicans in the Senate, prompting her to ask Sen. Barrasso how this midterm is going to be for the Republican Party, to which he said:

"I'm optimistic with opportunities to pick up seats. New Hampshire, Michigan, Minnesota...you talk about corruption, that's what we're seeing in Minnesota in their state run by the- the Democrats. In Michigan, I don't know if you saw the debate this past week. [Abdul] El-Sayed was on, the Democrat nominee for the Senate in Michigan against Mike Rogers. He was asked, "Who's more of a threat to the United States, Iran or Israel?" He could not answer and refused to answer the question. Everyone in the world knows that Iran is much more of a threat to the United States. They chant, 'Death to America.' Israel is our friend and ally. He would not admit it. Iran is at war with the United States. They've been killing Americans for 50 years, and the candidate in Michigan is so extreme that he will not even admit the reality of what the American people see."

During the interview, Brennan and Barrasso talked about President Donald Trump announcing he's going to start importing Russian diesel fuel to help American farmers, ranchers and truckers, but Brennan said Congress banned Russian energy imports back in 2022.

Brennan also said Congress recently put in place "place more possible financial penalties to the buyers of Russian oil," leading her to ask the senator if President Trump's actions violate the laws, and how he justifies giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a lifeline, and he said:

Later in the interview, Brennan and Barrasso talked about the allegations against Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is Donald Trump Jr.'s ex-fiancee, where she asked a Trump donor to give her $100,000 to pay off credit card debt, as well as asked not to put some of the things in writing in fear it could endanger her job.

When asked if he can confirm if there's an investigation happening now regarding these actions, Barrasso said:

"What we've seen in the reports is very troubling. It's concerning and I'm sure there's going to be an investigation. I would assume the State Department would be conducting that. I know that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will have oversight and look into that as well. But I think the public has a right to know what was- what is found. And it is quite a bit of concern."

Brennan then asked the senator if he was comfortable with any U.S. official asking someone to pay off debt in exchange for access to government officials, and he said, "No, I'm not."
