Torey Lovullo’s future with Diamondbacks remains uncertain
SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - Even after missing the postseason, the Arizona Diamondbacks remain in the spotlight as questions surround the future of manager Torey Lovullo.
Lovullo's contract expired at the end of the season, leaving uncertainty over whether he will return to manage the Diamondbacks in 2027.
After Arizona's 9-4 loss Sunday, Lovullo was asked about his future and offered an emotional response.
"I've never felt unwanted, but you know there's some decisions that need to be made, and it's gotten this far, so I don't know what's going on," Lovullo said. "And once I figure that out, if it works in my favor, I just, I do want to be wanted."
Lovullo has managed the Diamondbacks since 2017, making him the longest-tenured manager in franchise history. During his tenure, Arizona has posted six winning seasons and reached the World Series in 2023.
The Diamondbacks have also come close to returning to the postseason in recent years. Arizona fell short in each of the past three seasons, despite remaining in contention late in the year.
Reports have indicated that Diamondbacks players enjoy playing for Lovullo, while the manager's contract situation has remained a point of uncertainty.
Lovullo made it clear, however, that he still has a strong connection to Arizona and would like to remain with the organization.
"Arizona is my home. I love Arizona, and the people and the fans are spectacular," Lovullo said. "The group that I work for is amazing. I love being around them every single day, and I don't want that to change, and I want to win a World Series with this organization."
Whether Lovullo returns to Arizona remains to be seen. If the Diamondbacks decide to move in another direction, Lovullo's decade of experience as a major league manager could make him a candidate for another opportunity elsewhere.
For now, the Diamondbacks and Lovullo face an uncertain offseason as both sides determine what comes next.
