19th Century shipwreck fragments show up on Nantucket beach after storms

NANTUCKET, R.I. (CBS, KYMA) - A portion of a historic shipwreck washed ashore as a Nor’easter slammed the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 26, according to local reports.

The Nantucket Current reported, citing archeologist David Robinson, that waves had washed ashore a likely remnant of the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted ship that wrecked on the island in 1884.

Other pieces of the ship were found in the same location in late 2022 and early 2023, the report said.

Video from Hafsa Lewis shows the wreckage remnants on Nantucket’s South shore.

The National Weather Service said on Friday that a Nor’easter would impact the region through Monday, bringing an extended period of strong winds, rough seas, and rain.
