Two Mexicali women go on hunger strike over electricity costs

MEXICALI, Mexico (KYMA) - Two women are on hunger strike in Mexicali over high electricity costs.

The hunger strike started Sunday night in Guadalupe Victoria, where power outages have also been reported.

The women said they will sleep at the sight for 30 days, consuming only water.

They are demanding lower electricity rates, saying some people are having to pay more than $900 a month.

"We are giving them 30 days to solve the problem in Mexicali, and if the government doesn't solve it in 30 days, we will stop drinking water, and that will continue for as long as God keeps us alive," said Maricela Barboza, one of the women on the hunger strike.

So far, they have not received any response from the Electricity Commission or the federal government.
