Protesters take over bridge toll booth in San Luis, Mexico

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA) - Protesters took over a bridge toll booth in San Luis, Mexico, demanding several changes.

They said under the original agreement, residents were supposed to be exempt from paying the toll, but that was not honored after the states installed toll barriers.

Activists also said they have been fighting for more than 38 years to ensure bridge revenues continue to benefit the municipalities of San Luis, Mexico, Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco.

"The toll barriers make traffic very difficult, causing long lines to form," said Sandra Gonzalez, a protester. "In addition to having them removed, we want all residents of San Luis Río Colorado and the surrounding Valley to be given a card."

Protesters are also calling for changes to the current toll collection system.

The current agreement ends this week.
