Portrait of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy unveiled in D.C.

WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA) - He may have been ousted as Speaker of the House about three years ago, but current House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) honored his predecessor in Washington, D.C. Tuesday.

Speaker Johnson helped unveil a new portrait depicting former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was on hand for the ceremony.

Current and former members of Congress helped pay homage to former Speaker McCarthy.

The portrait will be displayed in the Speaker's Lobby outside the House Chamber.

In October of 2023, McCarthy became the first sitting Speaker of the House to be voted out of office.

Back then, all 208 Democrats teamed up with just eight GOP lawmakers to vacate the Speaker's Chair for the first time in U.S. history that lawmakers have formally voted to remove a sitting Speaker in the middle of a term.
