CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Bear in Colorado looking for late-night snack

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS, KYMA) - A Colorado bear was caught on camera doing a late-night "trash inspection" in West Arvada as officials reminded residents that September is a particularly busy time for bears.

According to police, bears enter hyperphagia as fall approaches, a period of intense eating as they prepare for winter, making garbage, pet food, bird feeders, and other easy food sources around homes especially tempting.

"September is a busy time for bears," the Arvada Police Department (APD) said.

"When bears repeatedly find food around homes, they learn to return. Preventing that first food reward is one of the best ways we can help keep bears wild," APD added.
