2026 Prep Football Team Previews: Vincent Memorial Scots

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) - Vincent Memorial is off to a perfect 2-0 start this season, and the Scots are looking to turn that momentum into a return to the playoffs.

The Scots finished 4-6 last season, dropping six straight games before winning their final three. Now, Vincent Memorial is entering the season with a young roster and just seven seniors.

Co-head coach Fernando Santana says the team has 47 players between its JV and varsity squads, making it important for his staff to maximize the talent available.

“This year we only have seven seniors plus the whole group it’s small. I mean we have 47 players for JV and varsity,” Santana said. “They’re young. Some of those kids have been playing for a long time. So there’s a chemistry in them. They’re skilled players. We got speed.”

Senior Esteban Elorduy, a new addition to the Scots, is also embracing his role as a leader.

“It means a lot because I’m new here and I like to set the example for everyone,” Elorduy said. “I feel very good because we push everyone to their limits and to our standard which is the Scots standard.”

The Scots' fast start has also raised expectations for the rest of the season.

Junior quarterback Juani Mendoza says the team has its sights set on winning at the highest level.

“We’re trying to be better than last year. Last year wasn’t a really great year. But we’re going to be for sure better this year,“ Mendoza said. "We have a great team. We want to win. We want to win CIF and win every game.”

Senior receiver Andre Longoria says the team’s focus is to continue putting in the work that has helped it get off to a strong start.

“We have to train hard and keep doing what we’re doing and I think we’re going to win,” Longoria said.

With a young group gaining confidence and experience, Vincent Memorial hopes its 2-0 start is the beginning of a season that ends with the Scots back in the playoffs.
