The Freedom 250 Grand Prix speeds through the streets of the Nation’s Capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC, KYMA) - Indy drivers are gearing up for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix that will take place in Washington D.C. on Sunday.

The street race is one of the signature events of the summer commemorating America's 250th birthday, set against the backdrop of the Nation's Capital and it's historical landmarks.

It marks the first time an indy car event has ever competed on the National Mall.

Saturday fans gathered to watch practice laps and official qualifying, ahead of the big race Sunday.

It was also a chance to shop for merchandise and explore all the food and festivities.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will take place over 147 laps covering 250 miles kicking off at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time.

Four time Indy Series champion Alex Palou secured the pole position, while Kyle Kirkwood is the second place qualifier.
