Pennsylvania Attorney General sues Tik Tok accusing the social media giant of exposing children to addictive features

HARRISBURG, Pa. (NBC, KYMA) - Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has announced a lawsuit against TikTok, accusing the social media giant of exposing children to adult-themed content, and using addictive features to keep kids engaged with the app.

The lawsuit is asking for the court to step in and calling for civil penalties.

The infinite scrolling on TikTok is now part of a lawsuit by the Pennsylvania Attorney General, accusing the platform of being designed to be addictive to young people.

"They want users including children to crave the app they want users to endlessly scroll while they rake in astronomical ad revenue I'm standing here to say enough is enough and my office is taking action w this lawsuit ", said Dave Sunday, Pennsylvania Attorney General.

In Harrisburg today, Sunday is taking legal action against TikTok citing among other things how it handles its age rating, saying TikTok purposefully misrepresents itself to get a rating for those age 13 and up.

"The age restrictions that TikTok purports to maintain are essentially worthless", claims Sunday.

The Pennsylvania lawsuit comes as other states are also taking aim at social media companies using a similar legal approach.

In response to the lawsuit, TikTok released a statement saying in part, "This lawsuit relies on misleading and inaccurate claims and deliberately ignores the concrete safety measures TikTok has voluntarily implemented to support the well being of our community. Teen accounts have 50 preset safety, privacy and security settings built-in, and TikTok's family pairing tools give parents direct control over screen time and content filters."
