One dead in suspected home explosion in Indiana

PORTAGE, Ind. (NBC, KYMA) - The identity of the person killed in a suspected home explosion in northwest Indiana has been made public.

Family members confirmed Leona Rice died in the explosion that happened Tuesday in Portage.

Rice was in her 80s and had reportedly lived at the home for 30 years with her husband, Jerry, who was not present at the time of the possible explosion.

The explosion happened as severe storms moved through the area. However, it's unclear if those storms caused the suspected explosion.

Neighbors and fire officials confirmed weather conditions delayed emergency responders attempting to access the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
