CBP officers at San Ysidro Port of Entry seize fentanyl

SAN DIEGO (KYMA) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers seized fentanyl at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

In a press release, it happened last Monday when officers referred a 22-year-old man from Mexico, driving a 2024 Revoo electric moped, for a secondary inspection after the man "applied for admission into the United States."

CBP said officers used a "nonintrusive imaging system" during the inspection, but they were alerted to something underneath the rear of the moped.

Upon a physical inspection, CBP said officers found seven packages containing "16.53 pounds of white fentanyl powder," with an estimated street value of over $238,000.

"Smugglers are employing innovative tactics to smuggle lethal drugs into the country," said San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin. "Despite these challenges, officers remain vigilant while effectively utilizing their training, canine resources, and nonintrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts."

CBP said officers not only seized the narcotics, but seized the moped, a GPS tracker and a cellphone, and said they arrested the driver, who is facing "federal prosecution for narcotics importation."
