Large wildfire in New Mexico causes evacuation orders

SANTA FE COUNTY, N.M. (NBC, KYMA) - Evacuations have been ordered as a large wildfire that has burned thousands of acres bears down on a small town near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Ashley Ponce lives a little over two miles from where the Frijoles Fire burns in Santa Fe County.

More than 100 firefighters are working to contain the Frijoles Fire as it inches closer to the small community of Cundiyo.

As of Monday afternoon, the fire was about 2.5 miles away.

Hand crews and dozers have been building containment lines as air crews dropped water and retardant on its northwest flank.

Hot, dry and windy conditions mixed with dry fuels allowed the fire to grow by more than 1,000 acres over the weekend.

As of Tuesday, the Frijoles Fire has burned over 6,214 acres and was at 0% containment.

Neighbors in the area were packing up their belongings in the event that they are evacuated.

Fire officials have placed Camino De Canon Street in Cundiyo under "Go" status, telling residents to leave now.

The county said it will open an evacuation shelter for anyone who needs it at Pojoaque Valley Middle School gym.

The rest of Cundiyo, roughly 25 miles north of Santa Fe, remains in "Ready" status.
