NFL Hall of Famer Roger Craig announces vascular dementia diagnosis

(CNN, KYMA) - It's been a bittersweet day at the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio.

On Saturday, new inductee Roger Craig revealed in a taped acceptance speech that he is battling vascular dementia.

The former running back said doctors believe repeated concussions he suffered during his 11-year playing career are partly to blame for his condition.

Craig played for three teams during his career, but the 66-year-old is mostly associated with his time with the San Francisco 49ers. The other teams he played for include the Los Angeles Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.

He made history with the 49ers in 1985 when he became the first player to ever rush for 1,000-yards and receive 1,000-yards in the same season.

Craig was one of five players inducted Saturday. The other four include quarterback Drew Brees, linebacker Luke Kuechly, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, and kicker Adam Vinatieri.
