Eight children hospitalized after a car crashes into preschool

GLENDALE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - In Glendale, California, eight children were taken to a hospital after a car crashed into a preschool Friday afternoon.

Those children ranged in age from four to five-ears old.

"The teacher started screaming, yelling big time, so I knew something was wrong," said nearby neighbor Mamoud Hijazi.

Living next to the Grandview House preschool in Glendale, Hijazi is used to hearing the happy screams of children playing.

Around 2 p.m., he heard a very different sound: A car crashed through the wall of the preschool, ending up inside a classroom full of children.

Hijazi says he found two children under a slab of debris that had collapsed on top of them. He says inside the crashed car he saw an elderly woman in the driver's seat.

Glendale Police say they believe a 79-year-old woman was trying to make a U-turn in the parking lot when she confused the gas pedal and the brake, accidentally accelerating into the building.

Police say a total of eight children were hospitalized, but their injuries weren't life-threatening.
