President Trump signs executive orders on birthright citizenship and birth tourism

WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump has signed executive orders Thursday addressing birthright citizenship and birth tourism.

In an Oval Office announcement, President Trump spoke to reporters, calling the Supreme Court's decision to uphold birthright citizenship "very unfortunate," saying that the administration is "making adjustments."

"We're cracking down very big, very big, big crackdowns, and this will give us the right to do it in a much more forceful manner. But they've taken birthright citizenship, and they've made a joke out of it. And we're actually the only country of of size, I think, just about the only country, period, that does birthright citizenship. I thought we would win it at the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, we had a bad decision, very unfair decision. Our country suffers because of it, and we're ending it a different way."

One of the executive orders seeks to limit birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to parents who do not meet certain immigration requirements while the other one bans birth tourism, which is a practice where some foreign nationals travel to the U.S. to give birth with the goal of their child obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Limiting birthright citizenship and birth tourism have been top priorities in the president's crackdown on immigration.
