‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ wins weekend box office

(CNN, KYMA) - August began with a huge weekend at the box office as Tom Holland and Zendaya both starred in the top two movies.

Disney's "Moana," a live-action remake of the 2016 animated film starring Dwayne Johnson, reprising his role as Maui, fell to fifth place, taking in $5.3 million.

Universal and Illumination's "Minions & Monsters," the third installment in the "Minions" prequel series and seventh installment in the "Despicable Me" franchise, made $5.8 million, moving up to fourth place.

Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5," which features Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack reprising their roles of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie respectively, rose to third place, earning $6.3 million for a domestic total of $462 million.

Universal's "The Odyssey," directed by Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan, took in $51 million, pushing its domestic total $395 million, but ceded the top spot to another Tom Holland-Zendaya film.

Sony and Marvel Studios' "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" had a massive debut, earning $355 million, just $2 million short of the all-time opening weekend record held by "Avengers: Endgame."
