Accountability called for at North Carolina ICE protests and vigils

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (NBC, KYMA) - Dozens gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina's First Ward Park over the weekend to honor two immigrant men killed during encounters with ice agents, and to call for accountability.

Holding candles, flowers and signs, attendees participated in the vigil organized by several groups as part of a nationwide day of action remembering Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Guerrero.

The event included music, moments of silence, and an opportunity for participants to stand together in solidarity.

Organizer Stefanía Arteaga with the Carolina Migrant Network told the crowd that, "We need to stand in solidarity and demand justice."

Flowers and candles were placed beneath the men's names as organizers emphasized the gathering was not only about remembering their lives but also about advocating for independent investigations into their deaths.

The vigil also focused on immigration enforcement closer to home.

Organizers said they plan to continue advocating for greater oversight of federal immigration enforcement.

And push for transparency, accountability and independent investigations into the deaths of the two men.
