San Francisco Zoo welcomes quartet of Chilean flamingo chicks

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS, KYMA) - San Francisco Zoo recently welcomed a quartet of Chilean flamingo chicks for the first time in almost a decade.

This brings the total number of Chilean flamingos at San Francisco Zoo to 45.

Footage captured by the zoo shows the chicks nestled at their parents feet as they flap their wings and practice balancing on one leg.

"The chicks are so far doing well and being cared for by their parents," said Quinn Brown, Curator of Birds.

"We made some adjustments to their environment over the past several months by installing a mesh netting enclosure over the habitat. The mesh enclosure allowed us to keep the flock outside, rather than inside their night quarters, and it made a difference in their behavior, allowing them to act more naturally," Brown added.
