FDA reverses investigation after Taylor Farms has false positive test for cyclospora

(NBC, KYMA) - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reversing part of its investigation into a multi-state cyclospora outbreak tied to shredded iceberg lettuce.

The FDA now says a lettuce sample from Taylor Fresh Foods that initially tested positive for cyclospora was actually a false positive after laboratory experts re-checked the results.

The agency says there are currently no confirmed positive product test for the parasite, but it is continuing to work with the company to ensure recalled lettuce linked to the outbreak is off the market.

Taylor Fresh says it voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce from central Mexico out of an abundance of caution and emphasizes the recall is limited to that product.

The company says all other Taylor Farms products, including its branded retail items, are not affected.

The CDC says the outbreak has sickened thousands of people and led to about a hundred hospitalizations.

The investigation is ongoing.
