Three pets dead after dog starts house fire in Maryland

HARTFORD COUNTY, Md. (CBS, KYMA) - Home security footage captured the moment a dog started a house fire in Hartford County, Maryland last Friday, killing three pets and causing "extensive" damage.

The footage, shared by Chad Ellis, shows the family dog, Bo, repeatedly jump onto the kitchen counter, before an orange glow emanates from the scene.

According to news reports, citing fire officials, the blaze was determined to be an accident after the Labrador turned on the toaster during the jumping, which ignited nearby combustibles.

The fire claimed the life of three other pets, a dog and two cats, and caused $150,000 worth of damage to the home on Foxglove Court in Belcamp, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

"On Friday, July 10, our sister, Shannon, her husband, Chad Ellis, and our nieces and nephew lost their home in a devastating house fire. The damage is extensive with next to nothing salvageable," a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family reads.

"While we are incredibly grateful that our nieces and nephew were not home at the time and that courageous neighbors were able to rescue their beloved dogs, Bo and Addie, their family also experienced heartbreaking losses," the GoFundMe post added. "They lost their sweet dog, Dakota, as well as their precious cats, Casey and Beth."

"In the midst of the devastation, there was one small miracle—after the flames were extinguished, their bearded dragon, Yoda, was found inside the home. Thanks to two days of excellent veterinary care, Yoda has made a remarkable recovery and is now back with the family," the GoFundMe post said.

The fundraising page was set up to help cover essential costs in the wake of the ordeal.

The GoFundMe has a goal of $150,000, with over $16,400 raised so far. If anyone would like to donate to the GoFundMe, click here.
